India’s fastest-growing industry is the food industry. To maintain food safety standards, it is critical to effectively execute and comply with legislation. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the country’s primary authority for establishing scientific standards for food products. The FSSAI ensures that a healthy, high-quality product is available for end-user use by registering with the FSSAI rather than acquiring a license.

All food industry operators involved in the storage, manufacture, processing, transportation, and distribution of foodstuffs must register with the FSSAI and receive permits. In India, the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) is the final authority for issuing a Food Safety and Standard Act 2006 License and Registration. The FSSAI (Food Safety and Norms Agency of India) performs the following primary functions.

  • To provide scientific guidelines for all foodstuffs
  • The manufacture, storage, distribution, import, and sale of food products in India must be controlled in order to advise and offer technical help to the national and state governments in the creation of food safety and nutrition rules and policies.
  • Prevention of food tampering
  • Investigate the administration and implementation of this Act.
  • To promote awareness about food safety in India.
  • To develop laboratory guidelines for food testing

The FSSAI plays a critical role in ensuring that the Food Business Operator meets all food safety compliance and adherence to standards, allowing consumers to consume food safely, healthily, and in good quality. To start or operate an Indian food business, the food operator must meet all of the requirements for FSSAI licenses and registrations. The FBO must apply for registration, licensing, and registration separately, and must apply for registration or license based on the FBO’s yearly turnover. However, the most common source of ambiguity is whether or not an organization or individual requires an FSSAI license.

FSSAI Registration

All food business owners and operators, as well as any other person or entity that deals with food, must be FSSAI-registered.

When seeking FSSAI registration, food business owners must submit Form A. Form A is the most basic form that a food service owner must fill out. A Form (FBOs). FSSAI License

In order to conduct a food business in India, any individual, corporation, or food business operator must obtain an FSSAI license. The FSSAI License is divided into two categories.-

  • State FSSAI License
  • Central FSSAI License

Based on the nature and scale of the food companies, the FBO must obtain the FSSAI from the appropriate government. Big FBOs involved in the manufacture, processing, sale, importation, transportation, and distribution of foodstuffs must receive the national FAIL in order to obtain the Central FSSAI License and the Medium Size FBO. This FSSAI food license is binding and is locational.

  • If a food business operator in the food sector has an annual turnover of more than twelve lakhs, it must obtain an FSSAI license. A slaughtering capacity is any food business with an output of more than 100 kg or liters per day, or the handling and collection of milk per day is more than 500 lit.,mres per day, or more than two large animals, ten small animals, or fifty poultry birds per day.

The FSSAI License is valid for one to five years. The FSSAI license must be renewed at least 30 days before it expires. If a food company needs a license for a longer period of time, it will have to pay a higher fee.

To obtain the license, foodservice operators must fill out the FSSAI License Form B, which is a required document. Food business operators with the State License (FORM B) must complete annual sales of 12-20 lakhs, as well as food operators with annual sales of more than 20 lakhs (FORM C). Furthermore, once the license has been obtained, the Food Business Operators (FBOs) must display the License Format in a prominent location on the premises and must notify the authorities of changes to business activities and changes.
